The Gate of Hell

The Gate of Hell

The Gate of Hell (นรก 6 ตุลา), a new painting by Wana Wanlayongkoon, was inspired by press photographs of the 1976 massacre at Thammasat University. The painting includes images of the smiling boy and the chair-wielding vigilante from Neal Ulevich’s famous photograph of the massacre. It also features police colonel Watcharin Niamvanichkul aiming his pistol while nonchalantly smoking a cigarette.

The Gate of Hell

The painting’s title is a reference to The Gates of Hell (La Porte de l’Enfer), the collection of bronze sculptures by Auguste Rodin. Wana’s intention is to show the perpetrators of the massacre in hell, as their crimes have gone unpunished.
