Michael Haneke’s The Piano Teacher (La Pianiste) will be shown in Korat at the A Romance... I Guess (หนังรัก... ก็รักแหละ) film festival on 23rd August at the Korat Cineplex. (The festival runs from 14th to 23rd August.) The film has been rated ‘20’ by the censor board, and it’s the latest of several non-Thai films featuring explicit sex to be passed here uncut. Similarly, Dogtooth (Κυνόδοντας) and Pink Flamingos have also been rated ‘20’ uncensored.
A draft law to replace the Film and Video Act 2008, scrapping the state censorship board in favour of a system of industry self-regulation, was approved by the Pheu Thai cabinet in April last year, though the draft has yet to be approved by parliament, and remains in limbo. But in the meantime, the current members of the censor board have been intentionally selected for their progressive views, in keeping with recommendations for increasing soft power issued in 2024, hence the liberal approach to films like The Piano Teacher.
