A new Steven Spielberg potential summer blockbuster was bound to be a highly anticipated release. But unfortunately, Disclosure Day doesn’t live up to the hype.
The chase sequences are unrealistic, with our heroes escaping completely unscathed in the nick of time. The sentimental Spielbergian elements — childhood homes, messages from cute animals, and even fairy tales — feel completely out of place in a film aimed at teenagers and adults. The alien imagery — Roswell and crop circles — is unoriginal.
Too much, including the conveniently all-powerful alien ‘device’, and the supposed North Korean nuclear threat, remains unexplained or underdeveloped. And the script is too clunky: Spielberg clearly wanted to highlight the importance of empathy, but he didn’t need to spell it out so directly.
